Response to Events in Venezuela

Comments from the Taiwan Affairs Office and the Ministry of National Defense on the implications of the United States capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro:

At the January 14 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked: The United States recently sent troops to forcibly take control of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and deport them, which has drawn widespread attention in Taiwan. Time magazine published an article saying that what Taiwan should really worry about is that U.S. attention will be consumed by Venezuela, thereby losing the United States as its “backer”; and that China does not need any international “precedent” to take action on its own territory. What is your comment on this?

TAO spokesperson Zhu Fenglian responded that Taiwan is a part of China. The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair, and resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese people themselves and a just cause to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Outsiders cannot be relied upon.” The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ attempt to “seek independence by relying on external forces” will only end up with them becoming “discarded pawns” of external forces.

(Reporter): Some public opinion on the island is concerned that the mainland might emulate what the United States did with Venezuela to “legitimize” taking action against Taiwan. Some foreign media say that if the mainland wanted to copy the U.S. approach to handling the Taiwan issue, the costs and risks would be much higher. What is your comment?

(Zhang Xiaogang): The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair; how it is resolved is for the Chinese people to decide, and external forces have no right to make remarks. Dealing with “Taiwan independence” armed forces would be like catching a turtle in a jar—any measures that can severely punish “Taiwan independence” elements are on the table.

The US’ Economic “Plundering” of Taiwan

Comment from the Taiwan Affairs Office on the announcement that a tariff deal between Taiwan and the United States is nearing completion, under which U.S. tariffs on imports from Taiwan would be lowered to 15 percent, and TSMC would make additional investments in Arizona to build at least five more semiconductor plants:

At the January 14 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked: The New York Times recently reported that people familiar with the matter said the United States is close to reaching a trade agreement with Taiwan, under which U.S. tariffs on imports from Taiwan would be lowered to 15 percent, and TSMC would make additional investments in Arizona to build at least five more semiconductor plants. Figures and public opinion in Taiwan have questioned whether the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities are “trading investment for tariffs,” which would lead to top-tier semiconductor production capacity moving to the United States and turn TSMC into “U.S. TSMC.” What is your comment?

TAO spokesperson Zhu Fenglian responded that the so-called agreement is an act of economic plunder by the United States against Taiwan using high tariffs as leverage, and a scheme to “bleed” Taiwan’s industries. This not only exposes the selfish nature of “America First,” but also lays bare the malicious intent of the United States in treating Taiwan as a pawn.

She said that when faced with the blatant bullying and plunder by external forces, the DPP authorities not only offer no resistance, but instead actively cater to them, treating the island’s core technological advantages as a “pledge of allegiance” to ingratiate themselves with outside forces. In tariff negotiations, they “kneel before even negotiating,” and in the face of economic extortion, they “offer the other cheek after being slapped.” The more “contracts of selling oneself” they sign, the more they will ultimately destroy Taiwan’s economic development prospects and harm the long-term interests of the people of Taiwan.

17 Strategies for Cross-Strait Relations

On the recent passage of draft amendments to the “Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area” in Taiwan:

At the January 14 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked: The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have recently passed four draft amendments related to security as well as revisions to the “Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.” Public opinion on the island has pointed out that these are concrete steps to push forward Lai Ching-te’s so-called “17 strategies,” aimed at further restricting cross-Strait exchanges. Behind this is the DPP authorities’ political calculation to achieve “martial law on speech” and “martial law on the internet.” What is your comment?

TAO spokesperson Zhu Fenglian responded that Lai Ching-te’s so-called “17 strategies” completely go against the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan that wants peace, development, exchange, and cooperation, and fully prove that he is a “destroyer of cross-Strait peace” and a “maker of Taiwan Strait crises.”

She said that the DPP authorities’ recent actions have sinister intentions and seek to open the door wide for further creating “green terror,” plotting “Taiwan independence authoritarianism,” and undermining cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation. These reprehensible actions that are anti-peace, anti-exchange, anti-democracy, and anti-humanity will inevitably be opposed and are doomed to fail.

Taiwan’s Resolve to Fight

From China’s Ministry of National Defense on a recent poll alleging 60% of respondents are “unwilling to go to the battlefield” :

(Reporter): It is reported that a Taiwan public opinion poll shows that more than 60% of respondents said they are unwilling for themselves or their family members to go to war. What is your comment?

(Zhang Xiaogang): This again shows that the overwhelming majority of people on the island want peace, development, exchange, and cooperation, and do not want to see cross-strait confrontation or antagonism, let alone armed conflict. The Lai Ching-te authorities are acting against the current, seeking “independence” and provoking war; their true face as “destroyers of peace,” “manufacturers of crisis,” and “instigators of war” will be seen through by more and more people. I believe no one is willing to be “cannon fodder” for “Taiwan independence.” The separatist “Taiwan independence” forces go against public opinion and will ultimately be swept into the dustbin of history.

Japanese Cabinet Secretary Visits Taiwan

16 January 2026

A Japanese delegation led by Katsunobu Kato, member of the House of Representatives and former chief cabinet secretary, was received at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ response:

Nippon TV reporter: A former Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary visited Taiwan and held talks with Taiwan’s “president” Lai Ching-te. Lai thanked the Japanese prime minister for continuing to express the position of attaching importance to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. What is China’s comment?

Guo Jiakun: Taiwan is a province of China; there is no such thing as a “president.” There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between countries that have diplomatic relations with China and the Taiwan authorities. We urge Japan to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and not send any wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. We also want to stress that what Japan should most do now is retract Kōichi Hagiuda’s erroneous Taiwan-related remarks.

“Legal Taiwan Independence” Will Be Crushed

7 January 2026

On the recent initiative by Taiwanese DPP lawmaker Lin I-chin to codify a two-state solution, with the aim to “legally define the relationship between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as an equal, state-to-state relationship”:

At the January 7 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked: According to Taiwanese media reports, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator proposed amending the current “Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area” to define cross-Strait relations as “Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China,” and to delete the wording “before national reunification” from the original provisions. Other media reports say that the proposer has already withdrawn the bill, while the proposer himself claims that “it has not yet been formally submitted.” What is your comment?

In response, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that they are paying close attention to these developments. He said that the proposal ignores the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan and the peace and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, openly challenges the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is part of China, and attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait in which there is only one China and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China. He said it is a naked attempt to push “legal Taiwan independence,” deliberately escalating cross-Strait tensions and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region. Its intentions are sinister and its nature is egregious, fully demonstrating that the Lai Ching-te authorities and the DPP are nothing less than “destroyers of peace,” “manufacturers of crises,” and “instigators of war.”

Chen said that “Taiwan independence” means war and is a dead end with no way out. He said China has full confidence and sufficient capability to smash any attempt at “legal Taiwan independence” in any form, and will never allow “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, under any name or in any way, to split Taiwan from China.

Chen added that history has already proven and will continue to prove that pursuing “Taiwan independence” separatism will never end well and will only lead to complete defeat. If “Taiwan independence” separatist forces dare to take reckless risks and cross red lines, China will, in accordance with the Anti-Secession Law, take resolute measures and deliver a head-on blow. He expressed the hope that Taiwan compatriots will clearly recognize the evil nature and grave harm of “Taiwan independence,” firmly stand on the correct side of history, resolutely oppose “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, and join together to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and protect the shared home of the Chinese nation.

“Taiwan Independence” Will be Punished For Life

On the announcement of another round of “Taiwan independence elements”, which brings the total to 26 individuals:

At the January 7 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked: In recent years, the mainland has released several batches of lists of “diehard Taiwan independence” elements and “Taiwan independence” enforcers and accomplices. How many people are currently on each list? Will punishment be further intensified in the future to bring them to justice? Some public opinion on the island says that the mainland’s punitive measures currently have no substantive impact on these individuals. What is the spokesperson’s comment on this?

In response, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that “Taiwan independence” elements are criminals who split the country and undermine cross-Strait relations, and are also national traitors who seek “independence,” provoke war, and harm the interests and well-being of their compatriots. As of now, 14 “diehard Taiwan independence” elements and 12 “Taiwan independence” enforcers and accomplices have been announced.

He said that any “Taiwan independence” elements who break the law, no matter where they are, will face all necessary measures: they will be punished in accordance with the law and held accountable for life.

Momentum Builds For National Reunification

A summary of developments in cross-Strait relations in the past year and predictions for the year ahead:

At the January 7 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked the spokesperson to summarize developments in cross-Strait relations in 2025 and to look ahead to cross-Strait relations in 2026.

In response, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that 2025 was a year in which cross-Strait relations pressed ahead through difficulties and momentum was built for national reunification. They firmly grasped the initiative and leadership in cross-Strait relations, pushed exchanges, cooperation, and integrated development to a higher level, demonstrated stronger capabilities to deter “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference, accumulated stronger momentum for advancing reunification, and gathered greater strength for promoting the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

First, they broke through obstacles and continued to expand cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation. They worked to overcome obstruction and restrictions imposed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, continued to expand people-to-people exchanges and cooperation across various fields, and promoted closer ties between compatriots on both sides and deeper, more substantive cooperation. They significantly increased the number of ports where Taiwan compatriots can obtain permits on arrival, introduced policies such as waiving the Taiwan Compatriot Permit application fee for “first-time applicants” and offering airfare discounts, and provided “greater openness, maximum convenience, and greater safety” for Taiwan compatriots traveling to and from the mainland. They successfully held events such as the Straits Forum, the Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit, and the Cross-Strait Grassroots Livelihood Development Exchange Conference, leading a new wave of exchanges. The numbers of Taiwan compatriots, Taiwanese youth, and “first-time visitors” coming to the mainland rose sharply. More and more Taiwan compatriots personally experienced the magnificence of the motherland’s landscapes, felt the dynamic vitality of Chinese-style modernization, appreciated the unique charm of Chinese culture, and took pride in being upright and dignified Chinese.

Second, they continued to deepen cross-Strait integrated development and share the opportunities of Chinese-style modernization. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee reviewed and adopted the recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan, making top-level design and strategic planning for development over the next five years. This provides strong impetus for Chinese-style modernization and opens broader space for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises to establish themselves and develop on the mainland. They respect, care for, and benefit Taiwan compatriots, implement policies of equal treatment for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises, and push for policies benefiting them to be implemented effectively. They advanced the construction of the cross-Strait integrated development demonstration zone with high quality, introduced a new batch of policies to deepen integrated development, and achieved new progress and results in Fujian–Taiwan integration. They held the 2025 Cross-Strait Entrepreneurs Summit Annual Meeting and dozens of cross-Strait economic and trade exchange activities, sharing the opportunities and achievements of Chinese-style modernization with Taiwan businesspeople and enterprises. They effectively responded to external tariff bullying, safeguarded the Chinese nation’s economy, and protected the interests of Taiwan businesses and enterprises on the mainland. More and more Taiwan compatriots have come to deeply recognize that both sides of the Strait form an inseparable community of shared destiny, and that the mainland is always a strong backing for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises.

Third, they resolutely opposed “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference and firmly safeguarded the shared home of the Chinese nation. They held a symposium marking the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Anti-Secession Law, conducted the “Strait Thunder–2025A” and “Justice Mission–2025” exercises, firmly defended national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely safeguarded the common interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait and the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. They punished in accordance with the law “diehard Taiwan independence” elements and their enforcers and accomplices, effectively deterring separatist provocations. They firmly upheld the authority of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, continued to consolidate the international one-China framework, and effectively curbed external forces’ use of the “Taiwan card.” They united the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots, upheld the one-China principle and the “1992 Consensus,” jointly opposed “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference, firmly safeguarded the shared home of the Chinese nation, and kept the future and destiny of the nation firmly in the hands of Chinese on both sides of the Strait. More and more people on the island have seen clearly the historical trend that the motherland will inevitably be reunified and have voiced hopes that cross-Strait relations will return to the correct track of peaceful development.

Chen said that on the eve of the New Year in 2026, President Xi Jinping delivered a New Year address, extending New Year greetings to Chinese at home and abroad, in which he emphasized that “compatriots on both sides of the Strait are bound by blood, and the historical trend toward national reunification is unstoppable.” In the new year, they will thoroughly implement the Party’s overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, uphold the one-China principle and the “1992 Consensus,” resolutely oppose “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference, unite the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots, promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and advance the great cause of national reunification.

He expressed the hope that Taiwan compatriots will continue to strengthen their resolve, backbone, and confidence in being Chinese, work together to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance the cause of national reunification, and strive unremittingly for the shared future of Chinese on both sides of the Strait.

Sanctions against Liu Shifang, Cheng Yingyao, and Chen Shuyi

On the announcement that Taiwanese Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang and Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao had been designated as “die-hard pro-independence elements,” along with Taiwan High Prosecutors Office prosecutor Chen Shu-yi, who was labeled as a henchman and accomplice of pro-independence forces, with threats of lifelong prosecution:

At the January 7 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, spokesperson Chen Binhua announced that the mainland has designated Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao as “diehard Taiwan independence” elements, and Chen Shuyi as a “Taiwan independence” enforcer and accomplice.

Chen Binhua said that he was announcing two decisions by the mainland. First, Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao are being designated as “diehard Taiwan independence” elements and will be punished in accordance with the law. Compatriots on both sides of the Strait share the same roots, culture, and heritage, and the common aspiration of people on both sides is for peace, development, exchange, and cooperation. Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao have gone against this trend, committed numerous “Taiwan independence” misdeeds, and aroused strong indignation among compatriots on both sides of the Strait. Many members of the public have reported them to the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, demanding that they be punished.

Chen said that Liu Shifang has openly propagated “Taiwan independence” separatist fallacies, harshly suppressed Taiwanese figures who support or participate in cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, persecuted mainland spouses in Taiwan, and tried by every means to set up obstacles to cross-Strait travel and block channels for communication between people on both sides. Cheng Yingyao has vigorously promoted provocative “independence-seeking” rhetoric, organized the compilation of “Taiwan independence” teaching materials to poison young people on the island, and obstructed cross-Strait educational exchanges and cooperation. Both Liu and Cheng are stubborn in their “Taiwan independence” ideology, brazen in their separatist rhetoric, and egregious in their actions. They have openly sought to split the country and incited secession, seriously undermined cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, gravely damaged the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and seriously harmed the interests and well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Strait.

Chen said that, in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, the mainland has decided to place Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao on the list of “diehard Taiwan independence” elements and impose sanctions on them. They and their family members are banned from entering the mainland and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions; institutions associated with them are restricted from cooperating with relevant organizations and individuals on the mainland; their associated enterprises and financial backers will not be allowed to seek profits on the mainland; and other necessary punitive measures will be taken. They will be held legally accountable for life. Compatriots on both sides of the Strait are welcome to continue providing information on the illegal and criminal activities of Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao.

Chen pointed out that “Taiwan independence” separatism is a serious scourge to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and that punishing in accordance with the law the very small number of “diehard Taiwan independence” elements is meant to fundamentally safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and protect the vital interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots—it is by no means directed at the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots. He expressed the hope that Taiwan compatriots will clearly recognize the Taiwan-harming nature, sinister intentions, and ugly true face of this tiny number of “diehard Taiwan independence” elements, consciously draw a clear line between themselves and people like Liu Shifang and Cheng Yingyao, resolutely oppose “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, firmly promote cross-Strait exchanges, cooperation, and integrated development, safeguard the shared home of the Chinese nation, and jointly create enduring well-being for compatriots on both sides of the Strait.

Chen then announced the second decision: Chen Shuyi, described as a “green judicial thug,” is being designated a “Taiwan independence” enforcer and accomplice and will be held legally accountable for life. According to investigations, Chen Shuyi, a prosecutor with Taiwan’s “High Prosecutors Office,” has willingly acted as an enforcer and accomplice of “Taiwan independence,” fabricated charges, manufactured wrongful cases, persecuted Taiwanese individuals who support or participate in cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, intimidated the public, and created a “green terror.” Her actions are of a vile nature and constitute serious crimes. The authorities are hereby continuing to solicit clues and evidence of Chen Shuyi’s illegal and criminal activities from both sides of the Strait (which can be sent to: [email protected]). They will base their actions on facts and the law and will punish Chen Shuyi in accordance with the law and hold her accountable for life.

Trump’s Statement on Taiwan

On US President Donald Trump, who told the New York Times it’s “up to” Xi Jinping what China does regarding Taiwan, and said he warned Xi he’d be “very unhappy” if Beijing changed the status quo:

Reuters reporter: Some analysts say China might draw lessons from the U.S. military strike on Venezuela. President Trump told The New York Times that if China seeks to change the status quo in Taiwan during his term, he would be very displeased. What is the Foreign Ministry’s comment on Trump’s remarks? Mao Ning: Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair. Resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese people themselves and brooks no external interference.

Justice Mission 2025 Exercises Around Taiwan

From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

CCTV Reporter: This morning, the Eastern Theater Command conducted military exercises near Taiwan Island. According to reports, these drills are a response to the United States’ recent large-scale arms sale to Taiwan totaling 11.1 billion USD. What is the spokesperson’s comment?

Lin Jian: The spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command has already released information regarding the exercises. The People’s Liberation Army’s military drills are a stern punishment for the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces who attempt to “seek independence through armed means.” They are a necessary action to safeguard China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

I want to emphasize that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities obstinately cling to a “Taiwan independence” position, attempting to “rely on the U.S. to seek independence,” and are willing to turn Taiwan into a “powder keg” and “ammunition depot.” This fully exposes their malicious nature as “destroyers of peace,” “creators of crises,” and “instigators of war.”

External forces, by “using Taiwan to contain China” and arming Taiwan, will only inflate the arrogance of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and push the Taiwan Strait toward a dangerous state of conflict.

The Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests. China’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity is unwavering. Any provocative act that crosses the line on the Taiwan question will be met with a firm Chinese response, and any attempt to obstruct China’s reunification will never succeed.

Reuters reporter: Was the trigger for China’s military exercises near Taiwan the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan worth 11.1 billion USD? And when the Eastern Theater Command referred to “external interference forces,” was it referring to the United States? (A reporter from Japan’s NHK asked a similar question.)

Lin Jian: I want to emphasize once again that China’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity is unwavering. Any egregious act of crossing the line on the Taiwan question will inevitably be met with a firm response from China.

Reporter: On December 29, the Eastern Theater Command conducted the “Justice Mission–2025” exercise around Taiwan. Some foreign media claim the drills are a response to the United States’ recent large-scale arms sales to Taiwan. Do you have any comment?

Zhang Xiaogang: The Eastern Theater Command immediately released information on the “Justice Mission–2025” exercise. This exercise is a serious warning to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external interference forces, and a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

In recent days, external forces have repeatedly crossed lines on the Taiwan question, attempting to embolden “Taiwan independence” separatists, intensify cross-strait confrontation, severely undermine China’s sovereignty and security, and gravely damage peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Lai Ching-te authorities, meanwhile, have shamelessly aligned themselves with external forces, recklessly provoking with their pursuit of “independence,” and have become the root cause of tension and the chief source of instability in the Taiwan Strait.

“Taiwan independence” and peace in the Taiwan Strait are as incompatible as fire and water. External forces that indulge or support “Taiwan independence” will only end up burning themselves and suffering the consequences. We urge relevant countries to abandon their fantasy of “using Taiwan to contain China,” stop fueling tensions on the Taiwan question, and refrain from challenging China’s determination and resolve to defend its core interests.

We also sternly warn the DPP authorities: seeking independence by relying on external forces is doomed to fail, and resisting reunification with military force leads to a dead end. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army will never hesitate in combating separatism and promoting reunification. It will continue to carry out anti-secession and anti-interference operations to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Japanese Lawmaker to Visit Taiwan

An exchange from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding a Japanese politician’s plan to visit Taiwan as proof it is an “independent country” :

A release from the Taiwan Affairs Office condemning Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and stating that recent exercises are a “solemn warning” to Taiwan:

At the December 31 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked for comment on the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command’s organization, starting on December 29, of forces from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force to conduct the “Justice Mission–2025” exercise around Taiwan, which has drawn close attention on the island and caused strong reactions.

In response, Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that the PLA’s relevant military actions constitute a solemn warning to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external interference, and are a necessary and just measure to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Lai Ching-te authorities are engaging in “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, currying favor with foreign forces without principles and selling out Taiwan without limits. They are willing to sacrifice Taiwan’s economic development and people’s well-being as they recklessly rush down a misguided path of colluding with external forces to pursue “independence” provocations and militarization. This has severely damaged cross-Strait relations, gravely threatened peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and seriously harmed the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots. Any “Taiwan independence” separatist actions will never be tolerated or indulged and will be met with decisive and severe blows.

Taiwan is China’s Taiwan. Any external forces that attempt to intervene in the Taiwan question or interfere in China’s internal affairs will inevitably smash themselves against the Great Wall of steel forged by the People’s Liberation Army and suffer crushing defeat. The historical trend toward national reunification is unstoppable, and no one should underestimate our firm resolve, unwavering will, or strong capability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. These military actions are directed at “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and external interference, and are intended to deter “Taiwan independence” forces from colluding with external powers to bring turmoil to the Taiwan Strait. Their purpose is to fundamentally safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, protect the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and safeguard the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots. They are by no means targeted at the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots.

He expressed the hope that Taiwan compatriots will clearly recognize the extreme danger and harm of the Lai Ching-te authorities’ “Taiwan independence” separatist path, join in resolutely opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism and foreign interference, firmly safeguard the shared home of the Chinese nation, and work together to create a bright future of national reunification and national rejuvenation.

Two notes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on diplomatic reactions to the Justice Mission 2025 exercises:

China News Service reporter: After China recently took countermeasures and punitive actions on Taiwan-related issues and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army conducted military exercises near the island of Taiwan, many countries—including Russia, Cuba, Serbia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and Pakistan—have expressed support. What is China’s comment on this?

Lin Jian: Since China announced the relevant countermeasures and carried out the related military exercises, dozens of countries have expressed support for China’s position in various forms. They have pointed out that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, that the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair, opposed any form of “Taiwan independence,” supported China’s defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposed external interference in China’s internal affairs, and stated that they will continue to abide by the one-China principle. We highly appreciate the firm support expressed by these countries for China’s position.

We would like to reiterate that China’s resolve to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity is unwavering; its resolve to defend national reunification and national interests is unwavering; and its resolve to curb “Taiwan independence” separatist forces from colluding with external forces and disrupting peace in the Taiwan Strait is unwavering. China Central Television (CCTV) reporter: It is reported that Japan, Australia, EU institutions, and some European countries have publicly expressed concern over China’s military exercises near Taiwan. How does the spokesperson respond?

Lin Jian: These countries and institutions turn a deaf ear to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces seeking independence through force and turn a blind eye to external forces interfering in China’s internal affairs, yet they criticize China’s necessary and just actions to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. They distort facts, confuse right and wrong, and act with blatant hypocrisy. China firmly opposes this and has lodged solemn representations.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair and brooks no external interference. The biggest reality in the Taiwan Strait is that both sides of the Strait belong to one China, and the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Strait comes from “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and the indulgence and support they receive from external forces.

The one-China principle is a broad consensus of the international community and a fundamental norm governing international relations. It is the political foundation for China’s relations with the 183 countries with which it has diplomatic ties. Japan, Australia, and European countries made political commitments to this principle when establishing diplomatic relations with China. China’s Coast Guard Activity

An exchange from the Taiwan Affairs Office regarding the China Coast Guard’s execution of law enforcement patrols in the restricted waters surrounding Kinmen:

At the December 31 press conference of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, a reporter asked for comment on the mainland Coast Guard once again entering the so-called “restricted waters” near Kinmen to conduct law-enforcement patrols. Taiwan’s maritime patrol authority claimed that “the mainland Coast Guard deliberately formed up to harass vessels, disregarded navigational safety, and created significant navigation risks for passing ships.”

In response, Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, and that Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu are all parts of China; therefore, there is fundamentally no such thing as so-called “restricted waters.” Claims that the mainland “disregarded the navigational safety of passing vessels” are entirely groundless.

The mainland Coast Guard’s law-enforcement patrols in the relevant waters are carried out in accordance with the law and are precisely intended to maintain normal navigation and operational order in those waters, as well as to safeguard the lives and property of fishermen on both sides of the Strait.

For a long time, the Democratic Progressive Party authorities have ignored the historical and objective facts of fishermen from both sides jointly operating in traditional fishing grounds. Their groundless detentions and even dangerous and rough treatment of mainland fishing vessels and fishermen are the real culprits creating navigation risks for passing ships and seriously threatening the lives and property of fishermen.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on the Taiwanese Special Defense Budget

On President Lai Ching-te’s proposed US$40 billion special budget for purchasing armaments from the United States:

Zhu Fenglian: The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair, and resolving it is a matter for the Chinese people alone, allowing no external interference. The Lai Ching-te administration, for the selfish interests of its party, continues to provoke “Taiwan independence,” repeatedly increases the defense budget, and pushes a “whole-of-society militarization,” tying the people of Taiwan to the separatist bandwagon. Its attempts to “rely on foreign forces to seek independence” and “use force to seek independence” threaten the safety and interests of the Taiwan people. “Taiwan independence” is a dead end; outsiders cannot be relied upon; reunification cannot be stopped. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement on the Announcement of US Arms Sales to Taiwan

On the news that the U.S. has initiated arms sales to Taiwan totaling about US$11 billion, one of the largest such packages:

Guo Jiakun: The U.S. has openly announced a massive plan to sell advanced weapons to Taiwan, which seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués, gravely harms China’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, severely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a seriously wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this.

The “Taiwan independence” separatist forces on the island are seeking “independence through armed means” and “resisting reunification with weapons,” squandering taxpayers’ money to purchase weaponry and willing to turn Taiwan into a “powder keg.” This will not save the doomed fate of “Taiwan independence.” It will only accelerate the region’s slide toward heightened tension and danger. The U.S. policy of “supporting independence with weapons” will only backfire on itself, and attempts to “use Taiwan to contain China” will never succeed.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Announcement of US Arms Sales to Taiwan

Continued arms sales commentary, this time from the Taiwan Affairs Office:

Chen Binhua: The Taiwan question concerns China’s core interests and is the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. The U.S. side has brazenly announced a massive arms sale plan to China’s Taiwan region, crudely interfering in China’s internal affairs and seriously violating the one-China principle and the three China–U.S. joint communiqués, especially the August 17 Communiqué. It gravely harms China’s sovereignty and security interests and sends a serious wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. We firmly oppose this and strongly condemn it. We demand that the U.S. immediately stop “arming Taiwan,” stop condoning and supporting “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, abide by the one-China principle and the three China–U.S. joint communiqués, honor the commitments made by U.S. leaders, and handle the Taiwan issue with the utmost caution.

The DPP authorities stubbornly pursue “seeking independence by relying on the U.S.” and “seeking independence by force,” constantly hyping so-called “defense resolve,” and are willing to turn Taiwan into a “powder keg” and an “ammunition depot,” even at the cost of turning the Taiwanese people into cannon fodder for “Taiwan independence.” This will only bring grave disaster to Taiwan compatriots and fully expose their vicious nature as “destroyers of peace,” “creators of crises,” and “instigators of war.” People across Taiwan should clearly recognize the DPP authorities’ bottomless, pernicious essence of “selling out Taiwan and courting war.” We solemnly warn the DPP authorities that national reunification is an unstoppable trend; if “Taiwan independence” separatist forces dare to cross the red line, we will resolutely strike back.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement on a Planned Radar Station on Kitadaito, Okinawa’s Easternmost Island

On the news that Japan’s Ministry of Defense signed a land lease agreement on the 15th, planning to deploy mobile radar equipment on the easternmost island of Okinawa to monitor the activities of Chinese aircraft carriers and aircraft in the waters between Okinawa and Miyako Island:

Guo Jiakun: In the relevant sea and air areas, all countries enjoy freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law.

Due to the history of Japanese militarist aggression, Japan’s military and security moves have long drawn close attention from its Asian neighbors and the international community. Japan has repeatedly strengthened targeted military deployments near Taiwan, and has even stated its intention to deploy intermediate-range missiles. Now it is further escalating by planning to deploy radar and troops to spy on its neighbors. Taken together with Prime Minister Takaichi’s series of erroneous and dangerous remarks regarding Taiwan, one must ask: Is Japan deliberately stirring up trouble, provoking China at close range, and seeking excuses to justify its military expansion and operations abroad? Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement on Radar Illumination Incident with JSDF Fighters

Guo Jiakun: China has already stated its stern position on this issue. The facts are very clear. The training activities conducted by the Chinese side in the relevant sea and airspace are in line with international law and international practice. The operations involved were professional, standardized, and beyond reproach. When carrier-based aircraft turn on their search radar during flight training, this is common practice for all countries and a normal operation to ensure flight safety.

The crux of this incident is that Japanese fighter jets intruded without authorization into China’s training area, conducting close-in reconnaissance and interference against Chinese military activities, and then, as the guilty party, they were the first to lodge accusations, hyping up the so-called “radar illumination” issue, turning black into white and shifting blame onto others, misleading the international community. China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to this, and has lodged stern representations and a strong protest with the Japanese side.

Anyone with clear eyes can see that the Japanese side is deliberately spreading and hyping up false information in the field of military security at this time, playing up tensions for entirely ulterior motives. We strongly urge Japan to immediately stop dangerous activities that disrupt China’s normal training operations, and to cease all irresponsible false hype and political manipulation.

Guo Jiakun: We have noted the U.S. government’s release of the National Security Strategy report. China has always believed that when China and the United States work together, both benefit; when they confront each other, both are harmed. Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation are the right ways for China and the United States to interact, and the only correct and realistic choice. China is willing to work with the U.S. to promote the stable development of China–U.S. relations, while firmly safeguarding its own sovereignty, security, and development interests. We hope the U.S. will move in the same direction as China, implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences, and push for stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China–U.S. relations, injecting more certainty and stability into the world.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Tariff Negotiations Between the US and Taiwan

Chen Binhua: The Lai Ching-te authorities, in order to “rely on external forces to seek independence,” have shown bottomless eagerness to ingratiate themselves with the United States. In the tariff negotiations, they “knelt before negotiating,” “offered the other cheek after being slapped,” and even repeatedly deceived the public. In terms of industry, they have allowed the United States to take whatever it wants, voluntarily handing over TSMC and allowing it to extract all remaining value from Taiwan’s advantageous industries. Previously, TSMC was forced to announce an additional USD 100 billion investment in the United States, which already caused panic within Taiwan’s industry and widespread public resentment. If this USD 300 billion investment materializes, it will undoubtedly deliver a huge blow to Taiwan’s economy, further weakening its growth momentum and autonomy. We are gravely concerned about this. We hope the people of Taiwan and all those with insight from various sectors will unite and take action to firmly oppose the Lai Ching-te authorities’ pro-U.S. behaviors and actively safeguard their own interests.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on the San Francisco Treaty and the China-Taiwan Relationship

Chen Binhua: The so-called “San Francisco Peace Treaty” was a product of the United States gathering a very small number of countries after World War II to conclude a separate peace with Japan. The treaty violated the provisions of the 1942 Declaration by the United Nations, which stated that “no signatory government shall make a separate armistice or peace with the enemy,” and also violated the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which stipulates that “a treaty may not create obligations or rights for a third state without its consent.” Therefore, it had no authority to dispose of matters such as Taiwan’s sovereignty or any sovereign rights or territory involving China, which was not a contracting party. It is illegal and invalid, and has no effect under international law. From the outset, the Chinese government has solemnly declared that it absolutely does not recognize it.

There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is a part of China. A series of international legal documents, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, clearly and unequivocally confirm China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. The Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China replacing the “Government of the Republic of China” was a change of government under the same subject of international law—China—and did not alter Taiwan’s status as part of China’s territory. The DPP authorities, relying on an invalid treaty, are once again recycling the cliché of the two sides of the Strait being “not subordinate to each other,” attempting to confuse the public, mislead opinion, and challenge the internationally recognized one-China principle. This completely ignores the facts and will only bring disgrace upon themselves.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Taiwan “Strengthening its Defense Capabilities”

Chen Binhua: Lai Ching-te is once again distorting facts and making irresponsible remarks; once again clamoring for “seeking independence through force” and “seeking independence by relying on external forces”; and once again hyping the false narrative of “democracy versus authoritarianism,” attempting to deceive the Taiwan public and mislead international opinion. Under the guise of “democracy” and “peace,” he is in fact aggressively pursuing militarization and colluding with external forces to continue provoking with attempts at “Taiwan independence,” thereby exposing once more his obstinate “Taiwan independence” nature and his true identity as a “destroyer of peace,” “creator of crises,” and “instigator of conflict.”

Since taking office, Lai Ching-te has stubbornly upheld a “Taiwan independence” stance, vigorously promoting separatist fallacies, and continuously stoking confrontation and hostility across the Strait. For the sake of partisan and personal interests, he has squandered public resources, pushed for “preparing for war to pursue independence” and “militarizing society,” dragging Taiwan into dangerous circumstances marked by rising tensions and potential conflict, and binding the people to the reckless path of “Taiwan independence” separatism. On the island, he has practiced “authoritarian rule,” repeatedly trampling on democracy and undermining freedoms, abusing judicial power to suppress political opponents, and continually creating a climate of “green terror” and a “chilling effect.” Filled with confrontational thinking, he severely violates public sentiment on the island and gravely harms democracy and the rule of law. He is both the instigator of tension and instability in the Taiwan Strait and the primary source of division within Taiwan society, and thus has no qualification to speak of “democracy” or “peace.”

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Taiwan’s Announced “Special Defense Budget”

Zhang Han: Lai Ching-te, who ingratiates himself with external forces without principle and sells out Taiwan without any bottom line, is racing headlong down the path of seeking “independence” through provocations and reckless militarism. He is squandering the hard-earned money of the people, pushing a policy of “everyone a soldier,” and is willing to turn Taiwan into a battlefield and its people into cannon fodder. Money that could have been used to improve people’s livelihoods is instead being wasted on buying weapons and enriching foreign arms dealers, which will only push Taiwan into an ever more dangerous situation of looming war.

“Taiwan independence” means war. We hope that our compatriots in Taiwan will clearly recognize the extreme danger and harm of Lai Ching-te’s attempt to ‘provoke war through Taiwan independence,’ firmly oppose “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference, and join us in bringing cross-Strait relations back onto the right track of peaceful development, genuinely safeguarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their own security and well-being. We sternly warn Lai Ching-te and the DPP authorities: do not play with fire—those who play with fire will surely burn themselves. Seeking “independence” by force and recklessly taking desperate risks will only dig your own grave!

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on “One Country – Two Systems”

Zhang Han: Lai Ching-te is arbitrarily clamping down on the freedom of Taiwan’s people to take part in cross-Strait exchanges and crudely depriving ordinary people of their right to pursue a better life, fully exposing his nature of “terror politics and green dictatorship.”

“One country, two systems” is a peaceful, democratic, well-intentioned, and win–win proposal. After reunification, with the strong motherland as a backing, the livelihoods and well-being of Taiwan compatriots will improve, their development space will expand, they will be safer and enjoy greater dignity, and they will be able to stand taller and more confidently on the international stage. Taiwan will enjoy lasting peace, and the people will live and work in contentment. Taiwan compatriots will, together with compatriots on the mainland, share in the dignity and glory of our great country and embrace a bright future of prosperity and stability.

The Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests and concerns the national sentiments of more than 1.4 billion Chinese people; it is a red line that absolutely must not be crossed. If “Taiwan independence” separatist forces dare to breach this red line, we will certainly take resolute action and strike them head-on. We will continue, on the basis of the one-China principle, to conduct broad exchanges of views and in-depth consultations with political parties, groups, and people from all walks of life in Taiwan on cross-Strait relations and national reunification, and jointly promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance the great cause of the reunification of the motherland.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Prime Minister Takaichi’s Refusal to Retract Comments on Taiwan

Zhang Han: This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery, and the 82nd anniversary of the Cairo Declaration. The Cairo Declaration and a series of other international legal instruments are major outcomes of the world anti-fascist war. They affirm from the perspective of international law China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and form an important part of the post-war international order. Observing the relevant provisions is an international legal obligation that Japan must assume.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s erroneous remarks on Taiwan interfere in China’s internal affairs, send a wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Lin Jian: By providing a platform for the leader of the Taiwan authorities to peddle “Taiwan independence” separatist fallacies, the relevant U.S. media outlet has seriously violated the one-China principle and the three China–U.S. joint communiqués, and sent a gravely wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. China firmly opposes this.

Lai Ching-te’s words and deeds once again expose his true nature as a diehard “Taiwan independence” element and his sinister scheme of “relying on the United States to seek independence.” They once again prove that he is a “peace saboteur” and a “troublemaker.” We urge the U.S. side to fully recognize the highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan question and to implement in earnest the commitments made by its leaders. Whatever Lai Ching-te says or does is like a mantis trying to stop a chariot — it is doomed to fail.

Mao Ning: Looking back at history, it is not difficult to see that launching external aggression under the pretext of a so-called “survival crisis” or “self-defense” was a typical tactic of Japanese militarism. In 1931, whether Japan could “secure Manchuria” was framed as a matter “threatening Japan’s survival,” and Japan used this as an excuse to launch the September 18th Incident and occupy Northeast China. Later, Japan claimed that the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” was a “war for Japan’s survival,” spreading its war of aggression across Asia. Even “whether to attack Pearl Harbor” was once regarded as a question that “threatened Japan’s survival,” which ultimately lit the fuse of the Pacific War.

The alarm has already sounded, and tragedy must not be allowed to repeat itself. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the international community must remain highly vigilant and firmly resist any attempt to revive militarism, in order to safeguard the post-war international order and uphold world peace.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on Supply Chain Coordination with the US Under the “Taiwan Model”

Zhu Fenglian: The so-called “Taiwan model” is nothing more than a “kowtowing-to-America model,” a fig leaf for selling out Taiwan. It will inevitably lead to the outflow of capital, technology, and talent to the U.S., severely damaging the development of Taiwan’s industries. The so-called “Taiwan–U.S. supply chain cooperation” is nothing but the U.S. openly plundering and monopolizing Taiwan’s advantageous industries. From “sharing fifty–fifty” to “taking everything,” Taiwan’s core industrial advantages will be completely lost, and the island’s employment, investment, and development momentum will suffer devastating blows.

Zhu Fenglian: Wen Ziyu and Chen Boyuan have long published and spread statements advocating “resisting China and protecting Taiwan” and “relying on the U.S. to seek independence,” inciting separatism. They have aggressively attacked and smeared mainland policies benefiting Taiwan and its people, bullied and persecuted mainland spouses in Taiwan and Taiwan compatriots who support peaceful cross-Strait relations, and acted as enforcers and accomplices of “Taiwan independence.” They have aided wrongdoing and created a malign influence. The public security authorities’ issuance of a wanted notice and reward for information on their criminal acts is a concrete step taken in accordance with the law to punish crimes of splitting the country or inciting secession. It is a righteous response to the strong public demand on both sides of the Strait to punish separatist activities. The reward measures in the notice will be implemented by public security authorities in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

The mainstream public opinion in Taiwan favors peace, development, exchanges, and cooperation. The extremely small number of “Taiwan independence” diehards, enforcers, and accomplices are destructive troublemakers whose misdeeds have caused deep resentment among the vast majority of people in Taiwan, who support punishing them in accordance with the law. These punitive measures are directed only at the diehard “Taiwan independence” elements and their enforcers or accomplices, and do not involve the broad masses of people in Taiwan. We hope compatriots on both sides of the Strait will actively provide information on relevant illegal activities and resolutely oppose all forms of separatist conduct.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement on Japanese Military Rearmament

Mao Ning: Japan has been continually “loosening restraints on itself” and expanding its military capabilities. Its defense budget has risen for thirteen consecutive years, and the new security laws lifted the ban on collective self-defense. Japan revised the “Three Principles on Arms Exports” into the “Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology,” continually relaxing restrictions on arms exports and even beginning to export lethal weapons. Japan claims to seek a world free of nuclear weapons, yet it is vigorously strengthening cooperation on “extended deterrence,” and is even seeking to revise the “Three Non-Nuclear Principles”—not possessing, not producing, and not introducing nuclear weapons—in order to pave the way for “nuclear sharing” arrangements. These trends show that Japan is breaking away from its exclusively defensive posture and accelerating its “rearmament.” One cannot help but ask: What exactly is Japan trying to do?

If Japan intends to return to the old path of militarism, abandon its commitment to peaceful development, and undermine the post-war international order, the Chinese people will not accept it, the international community will not allow it, and it will ultimately end in failure.

On October 25, at the conference commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration, Wang Huning, member of the CPC Politburo Standing Committee and Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, stated that after peaceful reunification, with the strong support of the motherland, Taiwan will enjoy “seven areas of improvement”: — better economic development, — better guarantees for energy and resources, — better infrastructure construction, — better security, — better external exchanges, — better livelihood and welfare for Taiwan compatriots, and — better spiritual and cultural life.

Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on the Criminal Investigation into Puma Shen (Shen Po-yang)

Zhang Han: Taiwan is a part of China, and “Taiwan independence” is an act of splitting the country and betraying the nation. The public security authorities’ decision to open a case and investigate Shen Po-yang for allegedly committing the crime of secession, and to pursue his criminal responsibility in accordance with the law, is reasonable and lawful. It is a concrete action to implement the Opinion on Punishing Stubborn ‘Taiwan Independence’ Elements for the Crimes of Splitting the Country and Inciting Splitting the Country in Accordance with the Law, and a just and necessary measure to oppose “Taiwan independence” separatism and safeguard national unity.

This judicial and law-enforcement action targets only a very small number of “Taiwan independence” diehards whose words and deeds are egregious and whose separatist activities are rampant. It does not target and does not involve the broad mass of Taiwan compatriots. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities deliberately blur the distinction between the general public and a tiny number of “Taiwan independence” diehards in order to intimidate the people — revealing their own guilty conscience and fear.

The egregious remarks concerning Taiwan made openly by a Japanese leader in the Diet seriously violate the one-China principle and constitute a blatant interference in China’s internal affairs. Japan bears historical guilt toward the Chinese people on the Taiwan issue and committed countless crimes during its 50 years of colonial rule and enslavement of Taiwan. Eighty years ago, we defeated the Japanese aggressors, recovered Taiwan, and ended Japan’s occupation and plunder. Eighty years later, anyone who dares to challenge China’s core interests or attempts to obstruct the great cause of China’s reunification will find that the Chinese government, the Chinese people, and the Chinese military will never agree and will never tolerate it.

Japan should deeply reflect on its history, learn from past lessons, adhere to the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, honor its political commitments on the Taiwan question, and handle Taiwan-related issues with the utmost prudence. How to resolve the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese people to decide. Taiwan Affairs Office Statement on the Sentencing of Retired Taiwanese General Gao Anguo

Chen Binhua: This is another vicious act by the DPP authorities of abusing the judiciary to suppress and persecute patriotic, pro-unification forces on the island. We strongly condemn it.

The DPP authorities repeatedly crack down on political dissent, and in particular arbitrarily persecute organizations and individuals who oppose “Taiwan independence” and advocate reunification. This is entirely rooted in the DPP’s pro-independence nature and is done for the party’s own interests. We hope all sectors of Taiwanese society will fully recognize the true nature of the case and jointly oppose its abuse of power to persecute patriots.
